Role summary:

We are seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Scientist in Microbiology to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will drive our research activities and customer project delivery by cultivating fastidious strains, proposing research plans, developing assays and coaching junior scientist/technicians for experiment execution and documentation. Join us in a critical, foundational role at the core of our R&D. As part of our fast-moving startup, you’ll work closely with Dong Zhao, our Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer, to help shape our bioprocess optimization platform and tackle complex challenges in microbial fermentation.

Key responsibilities:

• Cultivate and study a diverse range of microbial species, including strains with challenging traits such as flocculation, agglutination, sporulation, obligate anaerobiosis, strict nutritional dependencies and slow growth.
• Develop media and bioprocess for industrial and (fastidious) strains to enhance growth and/or functional traits at lab scale production.
• Design, develop, validate, and formalize genotype and phenotype assays for strain characterization, functional analysis, and quality control.
• Translate scientific research and discovery insights into actionable research plans under constrained start-up conditions.
• Manage and coach junior scientists and technicians for accurate experiment execution and documentation.
• Collaborate closely with lab automation, bioinformatics, and bioprocess experts for scalable data collection on fermentation parameters and metabolites.
• Develop deep understandings of customer needs through collaboration with industrial and academic partners to incubate innovation.
• Provide scientific leadership through publications, reports, conference presentations, and engagement with key opinion leaders and industry events.

Qualifications:

• PhD, postdoc, or equivalent experience in microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field

• Five years of experience in either industrial or scientific research settings

• In-depth understanding of microbial physiology, with a proven track record in assay development

• Hands-on experience working with fastidious and difficult-to-grow organisms

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

• Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal

• Must be available for on-site work in Freising, Germany

Nice to have:

• Knowledge of probiotics and their applications.
• Digital native, familiar with programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Matlab).
• Previous experience in a startup.
